Based on their operating principles, dust collectors can be classified into the following categories:

 

Dry Mechanical Dust Collectors: These devices are primarily designed to utilize the principles of dust inertia and gravity for removal.

Examples include settling chambers, inertial separators, and cyclone collectors. These high-concentration dust collectors are predominantly employed for the separation or concentration of dust characterized by high concentrations and coarse particle sizes.

 

Wet Dust Collectors: These devices rely on the wetting action of liquids (typically water) to separate and capture dust particles. Examples include spray towers, scrubbers, impact-type collectors, and Venturi scrubbers. They are frequently utilized in industrial settings to treat dust-laden gases generated during production processes-specifically in situations involving high dust concentrations and large gas flow volumes. For coarser, hydrophilic dust particles, their separation efficiency is generally higher than that of dry mechanical dust collectors.

 

Granular Bed Dust Collectors: These devices employ a packed bed of granular materials-of varying particle sizes-as a filtration medium to intercept and filter dust contained within an aerosol stream. They are primarily deployed at dust emission points in production processes within industries such as building materials and metallurgy, where they are frequently used to filter dust-laden flue gases characterized by high concentrations, coarse particles, and elevated temperatures.

 

Baghouse Dust Collectors: These filtration devices utilize woven fibrous fabrics or packed layers as their primary filtration medium. They exhibit a wide range of applications, structural configurations, air-handling capacities, and operational efficiencies. Primarily used for capturing fine dust particles, they are deployed in both exhaust dust removal systems and air intake systems. In recent years, driven by the continuous development of novel filtration materials, fiber filtration technology has advanced rapidly; the constant emergence of new products has, in turn, led to a continuous expansion of their application fields.

 

Electrostatic Precipitators (ESPs): These dust collectors operate by directing a dust-laden gas stream into a strong electrostatic field. Under the influence of this high-voltage field, the gas undergoes ionization, generating free electrons and positive ions. These charged particles migrate toward the respective positive and negative electrodes. As dust particles flow through this active electric field, they acquire an electric charge; they then drift at a specific velocity toward the collecting electrodes bearing the opposite charge, where they settle out. This process effectively separates the dust from the gas stream, allowing it to be collected within the precipitator. This type of dust collector is characterized by high dust removal efficiency, low airflow resistance, and ease of maintenance and management. It achieves results comparable to those of a baghouse dust collector in capturing fine dust particles.
