Operating a knife gate valve requires numerous turns of the handwheel (typically 6 to 8 turns for full opening), yet its bonnet can be directly removed for maintenance purposes. A plug valve, by contrast, requires only a quarter-turn to switch between open and closed states; however, if the valve core becomes worn, the entire core assembly must be replaced. Regarding routine upkeep, knife gate valves require periodic cleaning to remove accumulated debris from the gate slot, whereas plug valves require attention to the lubrication of their rotating components.
